Mohammed Ahmed makes a mark at Commonwealth Games

2014 Arkansas Outdoor Track & Field

Former Wisconsin standout long-distance runner Mohammed Ahmed carried his collegiate success into his post-graduate international career, recording impressive results last week at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ahmed ran in the 10,000 meters  and finished in 28:02.96—good enough for sixth place and the fourth-fastest finish all-time by a Wisconsin runner. The top three finishers in the race were separated by just 12 hundredths of a second and Ahmed missed fifth place by a narrow margin.

The St. Catharines, Ontario, native previously placed fifth in the 5,000 meters at the Games on July 27 with a personal-best time of 13:18.88. The result was the second-best time ever by a Wisconsin runner and third-fastest all-time by a Canadian.

Ahmed’s home country of Canada finished third overall at the Commonwealth Games, which is a multi-sport event featuring athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.
