NYPD Meets Muslims
NEW YORK,NY–The New York Police Department held its annual pre-Ramadan conference with the city’s Muslim leaders on June 9th, according to media reports.
Besides security for the holiday, they touched on how Muslims have been vilified in the past and how the Islamic State has been targeting youth on the internet, according to NY1 television station.
NYPD brass says it’s still trying to figure out how to deal with that.
“It’s a weakness we have right now, we really don’t know how to counter that message at this particular time, we’re struggling with that and we need to work together to find a way,” said Police Commissioner William Bratton.
“I think these types of meetings are important because it shows that we are going to build trust and collaborate together. The Muslim community cannot root out extremism without the help of law enforcement and law enforcement cannot really eliminate all the terroists in the world without the help of the Muslim community,” said Daisy Khan of the Women’s Islamic Initiative.
The department is also trying to recruit more Muslims in its ranks. According to Crain’s New York there are about 800 Muslim uniformed police officers out of about 35,000.
