Israel Launches Raids into Jenin Refugee Camp leading to Palestinian Retaliation

At the beginning of July, Israeli forces raided Jedin killing at least 10 Palestinians in what it said was an anti-terror operation. Jenin is a city in the northern part of the occupied West Bank. The West Bank is a territory that has been under Israeli military occupation since the 1967 Six-Day War. The West Bank, including Jenin, is part of the internationally recognized Palestinian territories and is subject to Israeli control.

Occupation has had a significant impact on the lives of Palestinians, including restrictions on movement, confiscation of land, and the establishment of Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law. Jenin itself is home to a large Palestinian refugee camp, established in 1953, following the displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. The camp is overcrowded and characterized by poor living conditions, with limited access to basic services such as water, electricity, and healthcare.

The city and its refugee camp have been the sites of numerous clashes between Palestinian armed groups and the Israeli military. The Israeli army has conducted multiple military operations in Jenin, aimed at targeting alleged militants and attempting to suppress the resistance. Against this backdrop, the recent Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp has drawn international attention and condemnation. The raid, characterized by excessive force and harm to civilians, has raised concerns about human rights violations and possible war crimes.

According to Al Jazeera, the UN Secretary-General’s criticism of Israel’s actions reflects broader international scrutiny of Israel’s occupation policies and military operations in Palestinian territories.

According to CNN,  this is Israel’s largest raid in Jeniin in over 20 years. Furthermore, at least 500 Palestinian families were displaced by the raid. Furthermore, in the aftermath of a raid, an Israeli soldier was killed in the aftermath in response to the raid according to Hamas. This happened in an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank.
