With election day less than two weeks away, the fate of this candidate selection could determine the future outcome of our country. Voters across the country will vote for the future President on Nov. 5. In the last-minute push ahead of the big day, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have been busy on the campaign trail, trying to reach several undecided voters.
Several Muslim leaders endorsed former Trump as he appeared at a rally in Novi, Michigan, in October. Nearly 20 faith leaders from across America, including Imam Bilal Alzuhiry, a Dearborn-based religious leader, met Trump backstage.
Mayor Bill Bazzi from Dearborn Heights also put forth his endorsement of Trump. He stated that they want a war-free zone and a positive future. They stated under the current administration war is only ongoing, and would in their personal opinion continue to exacerbate.
“We are a religion of peace,” said Alzuhiry. “And, we don’t want to see no more wars.”
Trump accepted the endorsements, but when local media outlets asked religious leaders in the region regarding Trump’s pro-Israel policies, and previous no ‘Muslim Ban’, they stated they would only want to move forward positively, and the future could be decided.
“Now, he is trying to extend his hand to us,” said Alzuhiry. “The fact that he is meeting us, he is listening to us attentively. I think this is a good gesture.”
However, several other Arab-American leaders in the Dearborn region held a press conference endorsing Kamala Harris.
“Despite our deep disappointment and anger with the Biden administration’s failed Middle East policies, we will not abandon our coalition partners. They share our horror over the killings and massive devastation in Gaza and Lebanon. They have stood with us in protest as we have stood with them. As we see it, the stakes in this November’s election are high for all Americans who care about peace, justice, and equity,” The Arab American Chamber of Commerce put forth a public statement.
They also noted the difference between the candidates.
“Donald Trump has called for a Muslim ban, the arrest and deportation of 11 million hard-working immigrants who contribute to our economy and internment camps,” The Arab American Chamber of Commerce Stated. “His xenophobia, bigotry, divisive rhetoric, and incitement to violence, present a real threat to all Americans.”
Amer Ghalib, who is the Mayor of Hamtramck, supports Trump and endorsed him on Facebook on October 20th.
“Though, it’s looking good, he may or may not win the election and be the 47th president of the United States, but I believe he is the right choice for this critical time,” Ghalib took to his personal Facebook page in Arabic.
Ghalib also stated he will not regret his decision no matter what the election outcome would be in the future.
“I’m ready to face the consequences,” Ghalib wrote on Facebook. “For this, and for many other reasons, I announce my support and endorsement for the former, and hopefully, the next President of the United States, Donald Trump.”
