Syrian Rebels Declare Syria Free as Asad Flees Country
by TMO Staff
Rebel forces in Syria declared Damascus “free,” after Bashar al-Assad fled the capital, according to a statement on Sunday.
“We declare the city of Damascus free from the tyrant Bashar al-Assad,” the Military Operations Command wrote in a post on Telegram. “To the displaced all over the world, a free Syria awaits you,” the statement added.
The rebels claimed to have entered the capital and taken control of the notorious Saydnaya Military Prison north of Damascus earlier in the weekend.
Videos shared across social media depicted dozens of prisoners running in celebration after being released, some barefoot and others wearing little clothing.
The country was freed after 13 brutal years of war and dictatorship. Reports indicate Bashar al-Assad and his family are now in Russia, which extended them asylum.
