Indian ladies’ tennis star Sania Mirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black have become the number two team in the race to Singapore for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) year-end doubles championships in November.
Mirza and Black won the Portugal Open at the beginning of May to win their first title of the season with a hard-fought 6-4 6-3 win over Czech Eva Hrdinova and Russian Valeria Solovyeva.
That was Mirza and Black’s third final of the season, after finishing runner-up at Indian Wells, California in March and again in Stuttgart, Germany in April.
Sania and Cara subsequently reached the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open last week. They now have 2,462 points and trail only the team of Italy’s Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani, who have 4,430 points. The top eight doubles pairs will compete in the year-end championships. In the individual doubles rankings, Mirza remains in eighth place.
