Michigan’s only Muslim legislator, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-12th), is beginning to make preparations to defend her seat. Last year she made history by becoming the first Muslim woman elected to serve in Michigan’s state House of Representatives–she soundly defeated her Democratic opponents in a heavily Democratic district with 44% of the vote in a field of eight, and then relatively easily defeated a Republican challenger in the main election.
She has done a great job as a legislator, sponsoring many bills in the brief time since she was sworn in, including a plan to combat illegal drugs and a plan to protect adults in foster care.
In a letter to supporters she explained that “It’s that time of the year where I need your help in making sure that I am re-elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. Please come in celebrate my victory and support my next campaign.â€
“With heartfelt appreciation, Rashidaâ€
Therefore she will have a “Celebrating Rashida in the Legislature†event on Friday May 22nd at 6pm at the Arab American National Museum, 13624 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI 48126.
Rashida has become a ray of hope for all Muslims in Michigan, indeed throughout the country.
